10 Best Baby Sleeping Bags for Summer (0.5 & 1 TOG)

10 Best Baby Sleeping Bags for Summer (0.5 & 1 TOG)

Once babies start rolling around, it becomes very unsafe to leave them sleeping in a swaddle. And the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends keeping loose bedding out of the sleeping area for at least the first 12 months of your baby’s life. So sleeping bags become the best sleeping solution for your baby. To avoid your baby kicking off their blankets and be cold at night, you can actually keep using a sleeping bag until they are older than 1 year old, and are able to put the blankets back on themselves. Here you will find a list of the best 0.5 or 1 TOG baby sleeping bags for summer.

TOG Rating

If you don’t know already, the TOG rating of a sleeping bag is a reflection of the product’s warmth. The higher the TOG, the warmer the sleeping bag. 0.5 and 1 TOG sleeping bags are the perfect solution for warmer temperatures above °20 C (67 °F).

  • 0.5 TOG Sleeping Bags: for temperatures between 22 and 25 °C (71-77 °F)
  • 1 TOG Sleeping Bags: for temperatures between 18 and 24 °C (64-74 °F)

For more information on the appropriate TOG rating to use depending on the room temperature, and what to wear under the sleeping bags, you can read here.

#1 Merino Kids GO GO Bag: Standard Weight

The Merino Kids Sleeping Bag (also called Go Go Bag) is the most perfect solution for your baby all year round, not just in summer! In fact, it is made or merino, which has an incomparable ability to maintain a comfortable micro-climate between body and bedding, keeping you baby cool when it is hot and warm when it is cold. It has a TOG rating of 0.5 – 1.8, suitable for a temperature range between 18 and 30 °C (64-86 °F).

The outer layer is made of certified organic cotton, which makes it very durable.

I have personally used this sleeping bag for my daughters all year round and I absolutely love it. Even though the temperature here in New Zealand goes below 18 °C in winter, I have a heater in the room that keeps the temperature at 19 °C minimum. This means I can use the Merino Kids Sleeping Bag no matter the season.

My second daughter sleeping with a Merino Kids GO GO Bag.

What I love:

  • Itch-free and allergy-safe
  • Very durable
  • Safety Belt aperture for use in car and strollers: perfect for travelling!
  • It comes in only 2 sizes (0-2 years and 2-4 years), which means you get a good use out of it

Cons:

  • Expensive compared to other types of sleeping bags. However, you are essentially buying one sleeping bag for all seasons, and each sleeping bag lasts for 2 years, so it’s actually cheaper in the long run
  • The zip needs to be closed from under the armpit instead of the feet, which makes it a bit uncomfortable to close, particularly with a wriggly child. However, it does make changing the diaper at night easier, as the zip opens up from the bottom

#2 HALO Sleepsack Wearable Blanket

The HALO Sleepsack Wearable Blanket is a great solution if you are on a budget. It’s very cheap but it is still of very good quality. It comes in either 100% Cotton, 100% Organic Cotton or 100% Cotton Muslin. Muslin in particular is a very breathable and soft material, helping regulate baby’s body temperature while they sleep.

The HALO Sleepsack also has a unique roomy sack design that does not restrict baby’s legs to ensure proper hip development. In fact, it is recognized by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute as “Hip Healthy.”

The TOG rating of the HALO Sleepsack Wearable Blanket is 0.5, which is perfect for temperatures above 21 °C (70 °F). Also, the zipper opens from the bottom, making nighttime diaper changes easier. However, the zipper is at the front, instead of the size, and I am personally not a huge fan or front zippers. I find it much easier when it’s on the side.

It comes in 6 different sizes:

  • Preemie: up to 2 Kgs (5lbs)
  • Newborn: 0-3 months
  • Small: 0-6 months
  • Medium: 6-12 months
  • Large: 12-18 months
  • X-Large: 18-24 months

What I love:

  • Great range of different cute patterns
  • The 100% Cotton Merino one is super soft
  • Very breathable for summer: merino more than cotton
  • Very affordable

Cons:

  • Merino is very delicate: you need to wash it either separately or, at least, make sure there’s not Velcro in the washing that could tear the fabric
  • Front zipper (this depends on what you prefer though)

#3 Woolino Ultimate Sleeping Bag

The Woolino Ultimate Sleeping Bag is quite similar to the Merino Kids Sleeping Bag. It is also made of Merino, which means that the sleeping bag is perfect all year round. It also has an Organic Cotton outer shell, which makes it very durable. It has the safety belt aperture for use in car and strollers, and the zipper is on the side instead of the front. The main differences between the Woolino and the Merino Kids Sleeping Bags are:

  • The Woolino sleeping bag has snaps on both shoulder instead of only one
  • The Woolino sleeping bag has a double zipper, so that you can open it up wither from the bottom or the side. I personally really love this feature: it makes changing diapers at night so much easier!
  • The Woolino sleeping bag is a bit cheaper than the Merino Kids sleeping bag. Bonus!
  • It comes in a universal size of 2 months to 2 years: this could be a bonus, but the downside is that you can’t use it for your a newborn, until they are 2 months old.

Woolino also offers a simpler and cheaper design with the Woolino Basic Sleeping Bag, which has no snaps and no travel slots, and it comes in traditional sizes (0-6, 6-18, 18-36 months).

Because Woolino sleeping bags are designed for all seasons, they do not offer a TOG rating, not even a range like the Merino Kids sleeping bags. However, they recommend using them in room temperature between 17 and 25 °C (63-77 °F).

What I love:

  • The double zipper on the side
  • Itch-free and allergy-safe
  • Very durable
  • Safety Belt aperture for use in car and strollers: perfect for travelling!

Cons:

  • Expensive compared to other types of sleeping bags. However, you are essentially buying one sleeping bag for all seasons, so it’s actually cheaper in the long run
  • The zip needs to be closed from under the armpit instead of the feet, which makes it a bit uncomfortable to close, particularly with a wriggly child.

#4 Nested Bean Zen Sack Classic

The Nested Bean Zen Sack Classic is another great sleeping bag. It has a unique feature which is the presence of light weighted pads on the chest and on the sides. Babies sleep better when they can feel your touch, but we can’t always be right there beside them while they sleep. So, Nested Bean pads mimic your touch! If you have a baby that sleeps on their belly, you can also reverse the Zen Sack so the weight is on your baby’s back instead of their chest.

That said, there are a lot of mixed reviews about the pads, mainly from parents that were expecting a miracle because of them! I think you need to realize that these just mimic a parent’s touch, but they don’t magically sleep train your baby! If your child is going through a sleep regression, like the 4-month sleep regression, then there are other factors at play and the sleep sack won’t make a difference!

The Zen Sack is also made from 100% cotton and it has adjustable shoulder tabs that allow for growth. It also has a two-way zipper system, similar to the Woolino sleeping bag, perfect for middle-of-the-night diaper changes. Finally, it comes in 3 different sizes: 0-6 months, 6-15 months, 15-24 months.

The TOG rating is 0.5.

What I love:

  • Unique feature of the weighted pads on the chest and sides
  • Double zipper on the side
  • It only comes in 3 sizes, so you get a good use out of it
  • Very affordable
  • If you buy a pack of 2 from the Nested Bean website, you get 15% off! Click here to go to the website.

Cons:

  • The zip needs to be closed from under the armpit instead of the feet, which makes it a bit uncomfortable to close, particularly with a wriggly child

#5 Kyte Baby Bamboo Ryon Sleeping Bag

My favorite thing about the Kyte Baby Sleeping Bag is the material it is made of, which is rayon of bamboo (97%, and 3% Spandex). Bamboo fabric is incredibly soft and breathable, not to mention hypoallergenic (great for babies with sensitive skin) and sustainable. In fact, it s one of the most sustainable resources on earth, making it an eco-friendly choice too.

It comes in a wide range of rainbow colors and it’s available in both TOG ratings of 0.5 and 1. The sleeping bag with a TOG of 1 has a polyester filling though. It is available in three different sizes: 0-6 months, 6-18 months, 18-36 months.

It also has a unique J-shape double zipper. I love the double zipper for easy diaper changes at night, but I am not sure I am sold on the J-shape. I think I prefer the standard zipper on the side.

What I love:

  • Made of bamboo, which is a sustainable material and is hypoallergenic
  • The double zipper on the side
  • It only comes in 3 sizes, meaning you get a good use out of it
  • Choice of 0.5 or 1 TOG

Cons:

  • The zip needs to be closed from the top instead of the feet, which makes it a bit uncomfortable to close, particularly with a wriggly child
  • Slightly more expensive than other sleeping bags

#6 Love to Dream Swaddle UP Transition Bag

The Love to Dream Swaddle UP Transition Bag is designed to help your baby transition from a swaddle to a sleeping bag. The wings allow your baby to safely sleep in their natural arms up position, and once they are ready the wings can be removed one at a time to help your baby to gradually transition to arms-free sleeping. I haven’t personally used these, but have a few friends that did and talk wonders about it.

It comes with a TOG rating of 0.2 or 1. And it comes in 3 different sizes: Medium (3-6 months), Large (6-9 months) and X-Large (9-12 months). It is made of 93% Cotton and 7% Elastene.

If you want something for a newborn, they only offer the Swaddle UP swaddle, with a TOG rating of 0.2 or 1, and 3 different sizes for up to 6 months. Same if you want something for a toddler that’s older than 12 months: they only offer the Love to Dream Sleeping Bag, which had a TOG rating of 0.2 and one size (6-18 months), or a Sleep Suit.

The zipper line is in the middle, which is not my favorite choice, because it makes changing diapers at night quite a mission.

What I love:

  • The unique design: transitioning a baby from a swaddle to a sleeping bag might not come easily and this is the perfect solution
  • Choice of TOG of 0.2 or 1

Cons:

  • Zipper in the middle: harder to change diapers at night
  • Too many sizes! If I had to go with this brand, I would need to buy so many different products to accommodate for my baby growing

#7 Adain + Anais Classic Sleeping Bag

The Adain + Anais Classic Sleeping Bag is as popular as the Halo Sleepsack because it is made from a single layer of cotton muslin. This fabric is incredibly soft and is also very breathable, helping regulate baby’s body temperature while they sleep. Its TOG rating is 1, which is perfect for temperatures between 20 and 24 °C (67-75 °F).

The zipper opens from the bottom, making nighttime diaper changes easier. However, the zipper is at the front, instead of the size, and I am personally not a huge fan or front zippers. I find it much easier when it’s on the side.

It comes in 4 sizes: 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-18 months, 18+ months.

What I love:

  • Amazing range of different cute patterns
  • Super soft
  • Very breathable for summer
  • Very affordable

Cons:

  • Quite delicate: you need to wash it either separately or, at least, make sure there’s not Velcro in the washing that could tear the fabric
  • Front zipper (this depends on what you prefer though)

#8 Burt’s Bees Baby Beekeeper Wearable Blanket

The Burt’s Bees Baby Beekeeper Wearable Blanket is another great sleeping bag made of 100% Certified Organic Cotton. It is very soft and durable and it comes in a TOG rating of 0.5. It also comes in 3 different sizes: 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-18 months.

The zipper opens from the bottom, which is great for cloth diaper changes at night. Pity that the zipper line is in the middle: I prefer it on the side.

What I love:

  • Made of 100% Certified Organic Cotton
  • Comes in only 3 sizes, meaning you get a good use out of it. However, it only comes for up to 18 months
  • Zipper opens from the bottom
  • Very breathable and durable
  • Nice range of colors / patterns

Cons:

  • Only comes in a TOG of 0.5
  • Front zipper (this depends on what you prefer though)

#9 Sleep Nest Lite from Baby Deedee

The Baby Deede Sleep Nest Lite sleeping bag is made from double-layered jersey cotton, that’s very soft and cozy. What I like about this sleeping bag is that it has snaps on both shoulder, making it very easy to put on and take off without waking baby up, and it comes in a cute range f colors and designs.

The zipper is at the front, not my favorite, and it doesn’t open up from the bottom, so not the easiest if changing a diaper at night.

It comes in a TOG rating of 0.6 (Sleep Nest Lite). They also offer a sleeping bag with a TOG rating of 1.2 (Sleep Nest Fleece), but that is made of Polar fleece instead of cotton.

What I love:

  • Made of cotton, soft and cozy
  • Snaps on both shoulders

Cons:

  • Front zipper that opens from the top

#10 SwaddleDesigns Sleeping Sack

The SwaddleDesigns Sleeping Sacks are another great choice of sleeping bag if you are looking for something made of either cotton muslin or 100% cotton.

The SwaddleDesigns Cotton Muslin Sleeping Sack is similar to the HALO Sleepsack Wearable Blanket or the Adain + Anais Classic Sleeping Bag, as in it’s made from soft cotton muslin, which is an incredibly soft and breathable material. The TOG rating for this sleeping bag is 0.3, which is good for hot summers with temperatures above 24 °C (76 °F).

If you prefer a slightly higher TOG rating, then they offer a sleeping bag made of 100% cotton. The SwaddleDesigns Cotton Knit Sleeping Sack has a TOG rating of 0.7 for temperatures between 22 and 25 °C (72-78 °F).

The SwaddleDesigns sleeping sacks have a double zipper, meaning you can open it from the bottom, making nighttime diaper changes easier. However, the zipper is at the front, instead of the size, and I am personally not a huge fan or front zippers. I find it much easier when it’s on the side.

They comes in 3 sizes: 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-18.
